Born on August 11, 1965, in Lafayette, Indiana, Embeth Davidtz is the daughter of South African parents John and Jean. Her family moved to Trenton, New Jersey, and later to South Africa when she was nine years old. Davidtz has Dutch, English, and French ancestry.
She attended The Glen High School in Pretoria and graduated in 1983. Davidtz then studied at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Her early education in South Africa exposed her to the Afrikaans language, which she had to learn before attending school.
Davidtz began her acting career at the age of 21 with the Cape Performing Arts Board (now known as Artscape) in Cape Town. She made her stage debut playing Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre.
Her performances in English and Afrikaans earned her nominations for the South African equivalent of the Tony Award. Davidtz also starred in other local plays, including Stille Nag (Silent Night) and A Chain of Voices.
