Eric Hill was a renowned English author and illustrator, best known for creating Spot, the lovable puppy who has captured the hearts of children worldwide. With over 60 million copies sold and translations in 60 languages, Hill's work has left an indelible mark on the world of children's literature.

Born on September 7, 1927, in Holloway, London, Hill was evacuated to the countryside during World War II. His early exposure to drawing and illustration began at the age of 14, when he worked as an errand boy in an illustration studio. This experience sparked a passion that would stay with him throughout his life.

In 1976, Hill created Spot, a playful puppy designed to help his son, Christopher, learn to read. This innovative concept involved hiding Spot behind flaps that children could lift, making the story an interactive experience. This unique approach not only made learning fun but also recognized the intelligence and curiosity of young children.

After a friend introduced Hill to a literary agent, his first book, "Where's Spot?", was published in 1980 by Frederick Warne & Co. The book's instant popularity led to a series of similar titles, and eventually, an expanded range of characters. Hill's work soon became a staple in children's literature, with his books being translated into numerous languages.

Hill's approach to storytelling was rooted in his belief that children are capable of understanding complex ideas. He aimed to invite young readers to experience concepts just beyond their current level of understanding, making his stories both entertaining and educational.

In recognition of his contributions to child literacy, Hill was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours.

Hill married twice, first to a woman named Sylvia, with whom he had a son, Christopher, and later to Gillian, with whom he had a daughter, Jane. He spent his later years in California, where he passed away on June 6, 2014, at the age of 86.
