Lead vocalist of the British band Hot Chocolate, known for his smooth, soulful voice and hits like "You Sexy Thing" and "Every 1's a Winner".
Errol Brown, the iconic British-Jamaican singer, songwriter, and frontman of the soul and funk band Hot Chocolate, left an indelible mark on the music industry with his smooth, velvety voice and signature hits like "You Sexy Thing" and "Brother Louie". With a career spanning over four decades, Brown's contributions to British music earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 2004.
Brown's break in music came in 1969 when he recorded a version of John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance" with Hot Chocolate Band. Unable to change the lyrics without Lennon's permission, he sent a copy to Apple Records, and the song was released with Lennon's approval. This humble beginning paved the way for Hot Chocolate's success, with Brown and bassist Tony Wilson writing most of the band's songs, including "Love Is Life", "You Could Have Been a Lady", and "Emma".
In 1985, Brown left Hot Chocolate to pursue a solo career, achieving success in the clubs with the 1987 single "Body Rocking", produced by Richard James Burgess. He continued to perform and release music throughout the 1990s, even making a memorable appearance on the popular TV show "This Is Your Life" in 1997.
Brown's contributions to British music were recognized with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2003, awarded by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2004, he received the Ivor Novello Award for outstanding contributions to British music. These prestigious honors cemented Brown's legacy as a music icon.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica on November 12, 1943, Brown moved to England at a young age. He was an avid supporter of the Conservative Party and even performed at the party's conference in 1984. Brown also had the privilege of performing at the wedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer at Buckingham Palace in 1981.
Brown passed away on May 6, 2015, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire new generations of music lovers. His soulful voice and timeless hits ensure his place in the pantheon of British music legends.
