Norwegian ice hockey player and coach who won Olympic medals and scored over 500 points in the NHL, later coaching teams in Europe.
Espen Knutsen is a Norwegian former professional ice hockey player and current general manager of Vlerenga in the Norwegian GET-ligaen, renowned for being the only Norwegian to have played in the NHL All-Star Game.
With a storied career spanning over two decades, Knutsen has left an indelible mark on the world of ice hockey, earning him the nickname "Shampoo" in his native Norway.
Drafted by the Hartford Whalers in the 10th round (204th overall) in 1990, Knutsen remained in Europe until 1997, playing for his hometown team Vlerenga and later Djurgrden of the Swedish Elitserien.
In 1996, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim acquired his rights, and he made his debut with the Ducks in 1997. After a brief stint in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, Knutsen returned to Djurgrden, becoming the highest-paid player in the Elitserien in the 1999-2000 season with a salary of 280,000.
In 2000, Knutsen got a second chance in the NHL when he signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets on the recommendation of assistant coach George Kingston, who had previously coached the Norwegian national team.
In his inaugural season, Knutsen tallied an impressive 53 points (11 goals, 42 assists) in 66 games, solidifying his position in the league. His remarkable performance earned him a spot on the World Team as an injury replacement in the 2002 All-Star Game, making him the first Norwegian ever to play in the NHL All-Star Game.
The subsequent seasons were marred by injuries, which saw Knutsen spending large parts of the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons on the injured list. He eventually left the NHL in early 2004, returning to Djurgrden once again.
Throughout his career, Knutsen has inspired a generation of Norwegian ice hockey players, paving the way for future talents to make their mark on the global stage.
In addition to his on-ice achievements, Knutsen has made significant contributions to the development of ice hockey in Norway, serving as the general manager of Vlerenga and playing a key role in shaping the country's ice hockey landscape.
Espen Knutsen's remarkable journey, marked by perseverance, determination, and a passion for the game, has cemented his status as a Norwegian ice hockey icon.
As a trailblazer, Knutsen continues to inspire future generations of ice hockey players, ensuring his legacy will endure for years to come.
