Fanny Searls, also known by her married name Fanny Gradle, was an American physician and botanical collector who left an indelible mark on the scientific community. She is particularly renowned for the discovery and collection of the Searls prairie clover, a species of plant that was subsequently named after her.
Searls was born on September 21, 1851, in Waukegan, Illinois, to Stewart Searls, a lawyer, and Emily Cuthbert, the daughter of a physician. She descended from Jeremiah Searles, who had migrated from England to New York in the previous century.
Searls received her early schooling in Waukegan and later attended the Northwest Female College in Evanston, Illinois, where she earned a Laureate in Science in 1870. She then entered Northwestern University, becoming the first woman to register in the first coeducational class at the institution, and one of only five women to enroll.
Searls received her medical doctor degree from the University of Michigan in 1877. At the time, it was difficult for women to gain internships due to gender discrimination, so instead she worked as a student nurse at Bellevue Hospital, New York.
In addition to her medical pursuits, Searls was an accomplished concert pianist. She had developed a talent for the piano from a young age and studied with Richard Strauss while in New York.
During her time in Nevada, Searls developed a passion for botanical collecting. She donated a collection of 215 specimens, including the Searls prairie clover, to Northwestern University.
Searls married Henry Gradle, a physician, on August 30, 1881. The couple moved to Santa Barbara, California, where Searls continued her medical practice and botanical pursuits.
Fanny Searls passed away on May 24, 1939, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering physician and botanical collector. Her contributions to the scientific community continue to inspire future generations of women in STEM fields.
