His passion for boxing began at the age of 12, when he started training at Chiwempala Community Hall, despite his parents' initial disapproval.
Undeterred, Bwalya would sneak out to attend boxing sessions, often going to bed hungry as punishment. However, after winning a gold medal at the 1989 East and Central Africa Boxing Championships, he convinced his parents that he could make a career out of boxing.
Turning professional in 1991, Bwalya quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world. He won the African Boxing Union light welterweight title in 1995 and the Commonwealth super lightweight title in 1997. His remarkable record of 12-1 with 9 knockout victories earned him the reputation as a formidable opponent in the ring.
One of Bwalya's most notable fights was against Briton Paul Burke in Lusaka, which ended in a controversial victory for the Zambian boxer. Tragically, Bwalya suffered head injuries during the fight, which ultimately led to his death on December 23, 1997, just two days after his 30th birthday.
