Dexter was born on July 26, 1961, in Saint Kitts, a British territory in the Caribbean. At the age of seven, he moved to Surrey with his family. He pursued a degree in law from University College London and began training as a barrister before discovering his passion for comedy.
Dexter started his comedy career by performing at latenight comedy venues, including Jongleurs club in London and The Comedy Store. His breakthrough came when he was hired to work with a Black and Asian cast in the BBC TV sketch show The Real McCoy, which was initially based on a stage show he performed at the Hackney Empire Theatre.
Dexter's television career saw him appear in various shows, including Felix Dexter On TV, a pilot sketch show that was part of the Comic Asides series, and Douglas, a sitcom pilot he wrote and starred in. Although neither pilot was picked up for a series, he received positive reviews for his work.
He became a regular performer on The Fast Show and later appeared in Citizen Khan, playing the role of Omar, a Somali Muslim who works at a mosque in Sparkhill, Birmingham. Dexter also starred in Absolutely Fabulous as John, the father of Saffron's baby.
In addition to his television work, Dexter was a regular on BBC Radio 4, featuring in shows such as Down the Line, The Simon Day Show, and Delete This at Your Peril, part of The Bob Servant Emails, written by Neil Forsyth.
In 2013, Dexter passed away on October 18, after battling multiple myeloma. As a tribute to his life and work, BBC Two television broadcast a 30-minute retrospective programme called Respect: A Felix Dexter Special, featuring tributes from friends and colleagues.
