Early Life and Career

Born on July 28, 1930, in Gopalganj District, Firoza Begum hailed from a prominent zamindar family. Her parents, Mohammad Ismail and Begum Kowkabunnesa, instilled in her a deep love for music from an early age. She began her musical journey in the 1940s, and her talent soon caught the attention of the national poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam, who became her mentor.

Rise to Fame

Firoza Begum's breakthrough came when she sang on All India Radio while still in sixth grade. Her first recording, an Islamic song, was released by HMV in 1942, marking the beginning of a prolific career that would see the release of 12 LPs, 4 EPs, 6 CDs, and over 20 audio cassettes.

Personal Life

In 1956, Firoza Begum married Kamal Dasgupta, a singer, composer, and lyricist who converted to Islam and took the name Kamal Uddin Ahmed. The couple had three sons, two of whom, Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed, are accomplished musicians and members of the popular rock band Miles.
