Lead vocalist of the 5th Dimension, known for harmonious vocals and iconic hits like "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and "Wedding Bell Blues".
Florence LaRue is a name synonymous with harmony, soul, and Grammy-winning success. As an original member of the iconic vocal group, the 5th Dimension, LaRue has been mesmerizing audiences with her powerful vocals and effortless style for over five decades.
Born on February 4, 1942, LaRue received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from California State University. But it was her voice that would ultimately become her greatest asset, leading her to join the 5th Dimension in 1966.
With the 5th Dimension, LaRue nearly always sang female lead on one song per album, with Marilyn McCoo taking the lead on one song as well. Otherwise, she sang the alto voice parts along with McCoo's soprano, being featured prominently on hits like "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Blowing Away," "Puppet Man," "Save the Country," and "Sweet Blindness."
After McCoo's departure, LaRue took center stage as the lead singer on hits like "Love Hangover" (1976). As a member of the 5th Dimension, LaRue received an impressive six Grammy Awards, including the prestigious Grammy Award for Record of the Year for "Up, Up and Away" (1968) and "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" (1969).
LaRue's acting career took off with roles in the CBS movie of the week "Happy" alongside Dom DeLuise. She also performed in the national tour of Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical "Ain't Misbehavin'," and starred in the Toronto and Calgary productions of "Mo Magic."
Her television appearances include co-hosting the Arthritis Telethon with Jane Wyman, judging two segments of "Puttin' on the Hits," and appearing as a celebrity guest on "Star Search." LaRue has also been a special guest on numerous television shows, including "The Dale Evans Show," "The Today Show," "The Carol Lawrence Show," and numerous other Christian and secular programs.
In April 2014, LaRue embarked on a new journey with her group, Florence LaRue & The Fifth Dimension, featuring Willie Williams, Leonard Tucker, Patrice Morris, and Floyd Smith. The group has performed at various venues, including The Villages, Florida, where they paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting in June 2016.
LaRue shared her thoughts on the events, saying, "We will not be deterred by hate and violence. We will continue to spread love and unity through music."
Florence LaRue's remarkable career is a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft. With her powerful vocals, captivating stage presence, and commitment to spreading love and unity, LaRue continues to inspire generations of music lovers and aspiring artists alike.
