Gottfredson was born on May 5, 1905, in Kaysville, Utah, into a large family of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A childhood hunting accident left him with a severely injured arm, which led to a long recovery period during which he developed an interest in cartooning. He took several cartooning correspondence courses and, due to his injury, learned to draw using his whole arm.
After achieving second place in a 1928 cartoon contest, Gottfredson moved to Southern California with his wife and family. Although he faced initial difficulties in finding work as a cartoonist, he eventually landed a job as a movie projectionist. However, when the movie theater was torn down, he decided to take a chance and inquire about a position at Disney studios, where he was hired on the spot.
Gottfredson started working on the Mickey Mouse daily comic strip in April 1930, just four months after its inception. He brought a new level of creativity and humor to the character, which quickly gained popularity and became an iconic part of American pop culture. His work on Mickey Mouse spanned over four decades, during which he wrote and drew over 2,500 strips.
