A renowned biathlete who won five Olympic medals, including two golds, and is considered one of the most successful biathletes of all time. He dominated the sport in the 1970s and 1980s, earning him legendary status.
Frank Ullrich is a German politician and former biathlete, renowned for his exceptional skills in the winter sport, which earned him multiple Olympic medals and World Cup victories. With a decorated career in biathlon, Ullrich later shifted his focus to politics, becoming a member of the German Bundestag in 2021.
Born on January 24, 1958, Ullrich was surrounded by biathlon from a young age, with his father being a biathlon referee. He made his debut in 1967 at the GDR Children Championships and went on to become the Youth World Champion in relay in 1975.
Ullrich's Olympic debut in 1976 brought him a bronze medal in the 4 x 7.5 km relay team, followed by a triumphant performance at the 1980 Winter Olympics, where he won three medals, including a gold in the 10 km sprint. His dominance in the sport continued, with Ullrich winning multiple World Cup titles between 1978 and 1981.
In 1982, Ullrich's life took a dramatic turn when his wife fell ill and passed away. This personal tragedy led him to shift his focus from competing to coaching, and he went on to study at the National Academy for Body Culture. In 1987, he became the trainer of the East Germany national team, and following German reunification, he became the national trainer for the sprint.
Ullrich's entry into politics was marked by his candidacy in the 2021 German federal election, where he ran as a direct candidate for the SPD in the constituency of Suhl – Schmalkalden – Meiningen – Hildburghausen – Sonneberg in Thuringia. His victory, with 33.5% of the votes, secured him a seat in the 20th Bundestag.
Frank Ullrich's impact on biathlon is undeniable. Even though he retired in the mid-80s, only five male biathletes have surpassed him in terms of World Cup victories. His contributions to the sport, both as an athlete and a coach, have left an indelible mark.
Ullrich's foray into politics has been seen as a promising development, with many hoping that his working-class background and social democratic values will bring a fresh perspective to the German political arena.
