Frantiek Kaberle, a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman, is renowned for his illustrious 20-season career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and his impressive achievements in international competitions. He is best known for scoring the game-winning goal in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to their first-ever Stanley Cup championship.
Kaberle was drafted 76th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. During the 1999-2000 season, he was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers, where he scored his first career NHL goal on April 8, 2000, against Arturs Irbe and the Carolina Hurricanes. After the 2004-05 lockout, Kaberle signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he would go on to make history.
In the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, Kaberle scored a power-play goal in the second period of Game 7 against the Edmonton Oilers, securing the Hurricanes' first Stanley Cup championship. This milestone marked his only Stanley Cup win. Kaberle's international accomplishments include winning the Ice Hockey World Championships five times (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005) and capturing the bronze medal at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin.
During the offseason before the 2006-07 season, Kaberle suffered a shoulder injury, which led to him being placed on the injured reserve. He was removed from the injured reserve on February 6, 2007, and scored the game winner that same night. After four seasons with the Hurricanes, Kaberle was declared a free agent and returned to his native Czech Republic, rejoining his original club, HC Kladno, for the 2009-10 season. He played two more seasons in the Czech Extraliga with HC Pardubice and HC Plze before concluding his professional career after the 2011-12 season.
