Born on September 2, 1977, in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, Rhône, France, Kanout's talents as a striker were first identified by his local team, Olympique Lyonnais. He joined the club as an apprentice in 1997, making his debut in the Intertoto Cup against Polish side Odra Wodzisław.
In 2000, Kanout was signed by West Ham United on an initial loan basis, eventually making his move permanent. During his time at the Boleyn Ground, he formed a solid partnership with Paolo Di Canio, but his laid-back attitude often sparked criticism. West Ham's relegation in the 2002-03 season led to Kanout's transfer to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £3.5 million in 2003.
