As a freelance sound engineer, Hilpert worked with several German acts, including the new wave band Din A Testbild, before becoming associated with Kraftwerk in 1989.
Hilpert's work with Kraftwerk has been instrumental in shaping the band's sound and style. He replaced Wolfgang Flür in concert when the band resumed touring in 1990 and engineered the album The Mix, released in 1991. Hilpert has made significant musical contributions to Kraftwerk's compositions since Expo 2000 in 1999 and is credited as a co-composer on most tracks on the album Tour de France Soundtracks.
In addition to his work as a musician and sound engineer, Hilpert has been an integral part of the Kling Klang studio team, working as a sound programmer and engineer alongside Henning Schmitz. He is also responsible for administering the Kraftwerk.com and Klingklang.com websites.
In 2008, Hilpert faced a health scare while on tour with Kraftwerk in Australia, forcing the band to cancel a show in Melbourne. Fortunately, he was cleared to fly and continue the tour the next day.
