A British actor who played the role of Mike Gambit in the popular 1970s TV series "The New Avengers" and appeared in numerous other films and television shows.
Gareth Hunt is best remembered for his iconic roles in two popular British television series: Frederick Norton in the period drama Upstairs, Downstairs and Mike Gambit in the action-adventure series The New Avengers. With a career spanning over three decades, Hunt left an indelible mark on British television, impressing audiences with his versatility and charm.
Born Alan Leonard Hunt on February 7, 1942, in Battersea, London, Hunt's early life was marked by tragedy when his father was killed in World War II when he was just two years old. He was brought up by his mother, Doris, and stepfather. At 15, he joined the Merchant Navy, but after six years, he jumped ship in New Zealand and worked in a car plant for a year before being caught and serving three months in a military prison.
After being deported back to Britain, Hunt took a BBC design course and held a variety of jobs, including stagehand, road digger, butcher's assistant, and door-to-door salesman. However, his interest in acting persisted, and he eventually trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.
Before transitioning to television, Hunt honed his craft on stage, performing in numerous productions across the UK. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre in the early 1970s, appearing in notable productions such as Twelfth Night, Oh What a Lovely War, and West Side Story.
Hunt's television career began in 1968 with a guest appearance in the series Frontier. He went on to appear in various television shows, including For the Love of Ada, A Family at War, and The Organisation. In 1974, he played a role in the Doctor Who story Planet of the Spiders and Bless This House.
However, it was his breakout role as Trooper Norton in the Upstairs, Downstairs episode Missing Believed Killed that led to his casting as Frederick Norton, the footman, in the fifth series of the show. Hunt's portrayal of the loyal and charming footman earned him widespread recognition and praise.
In 1976, Hunt joined the cast of The New Avengers, playing Mike Gambit, a tough and charming agent, alongside Patrick Macnee and Joanna Lumley. The show was a huge success, running for two seasons and cementing Hunt's status as a household name.
Gareth Hunt's contributions to British television are still celebrated today. His iconic roles in Upstairs, Downstairs and The New Avengers remain beloved by audiences, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of actors and fans alike.
Hunt passed away on March 14, 2007, but his impact on British television remains indelible, and his charming on-screen presence continues to delight audiences to this day.
