Garth Richard Nix was born on July 19, 1963, in Melbourne, Australia. He grew up in Canberra, where he attended Turner Primary School, Lyneham High School, and Dickson College. During his time at Dickson College, Nix joined the Australian Army Reserve.
After completing his education, Nix worked for the Australian government and later traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 1983, he returned to Australia and pursued a BA in professional writing at the University of Canberra. Following his graduation, he worked in a Canberra bookshop before moving to Sydney in 1987, where he began his career in the publishing industry.
Nix's career in publishing progressed rapidly, with him becoming a sales representative and publicist before being appointed as a senior editor at HarperCollins. In 1993, he embarked on further travels, exploring Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Upon his return, he established his own marketing consultancy firm, Gotley Nix Evans Pty Ltd.
