Genesis P-Orridge, born Neil Andrew Megson, was a groundbreaking English singer-songwriter, musician, poet, performance artist, and occultist who rose to notoriety as the founder of the COUM Transmissions artistic collective and lead vocalist of the seminal industrial band Throbbing Gristle.

Born in Manchester in 1950, P-Orridge developed an early interest in art, occultism, and the avant-garde while attending Solihull School. After dropping out of studies at the University of Hull, they moved into a countercultural commune in London and adopted the pseudonym Genesis P-Orridge.
In the early 1970s, P-Orridge founded COUM Transmissions with Cosey Fanni Tutti, an artistic collective that produced confrontational performance works that tackled taboo subjects such as sex work, pornography, serial killers, and occultism. Their 1976 Prostitution show at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts was particularly vilified by tabloids, earning them the moniker of the "wreckers of civilization."
Throbbing Gristle, a band that grew out of COUM, was active from 1975 to 1981 and became one of the pioneering acts of the industrial music genre. Their music was characterized by its use of noise, synthesizers, and distorted vocals, and was often described as "the most aggressive, confrontational, and sonically extreme" of its time.
In 1981, P-Orridge cofounded Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth, an informal occult order influenced by chaos magic and experimental music. Although viewed as the group's leader, P-Orridge rejected that position and eventually left the group in 1991.
Also in 1981, P-Orridge cofounded Psychic TV, an experimental band that blended elements of industrial, acid house, and psychedelic music. The band was active until 1994 and released numerous albums and singles that showcased P-Orridge's unique vocal style and artistic vision.
In 1992, a Channel 4 documentary accused P-Orridge of sexually abusing children, leading to a police investigation. P-Orridge was subsequently cleared of all charges, and Channel 4 retracted their allegations.
