He then moved to Los Angeles, where he studied fashion design at the University of Southern California and worked in the display department of the I. Magnin retail store.
Beene's passion for fashion eventually took him to New York City, where he attended the Traphagen School of Fashion. He further honed his skills in Paris, studying at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne (ECSCP) and working at the couture house of Molyneux.
In 1949, Beene returned to New York, where he became Assistant Designer at the Seventh Avenue house of Harmay. Nine years later, he left Harmay to design with Teal Traina, eventually founding his eponymous design house, Geoffrey Beene, Inc., in 1963.
