George Russell, a British racing driver, is renowned for his exceptional driving skills and impressive achievements in the world of Formula One. Currently competing for Mercedes, Russell has already made a name for himself in the racing community, having won several karting championships, including the CIKFIA European Karting Championship in 2012, and later becoming the 2018 Formula 2 champion and the 2017 GP3 Series champion.
Russell was born on February 15, 1998, in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, to Steve and Alison Russell. He is the youngest of three siblings, including a sister, Cara, and an older brother, Benjy, who was also involved in competitive karting. Russell attributes his brother as the reason for using the number 63 as his permanent race number in Formula One.
Russell spent his early years in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, where he was educated at the Wisbech Grammar School. At the age of 18, he moved to Milton Keynes to be closer to his racing teams.
Russell's racing career began at the tender age of 7, when he started karting. He rapidly rose through the ranks, winning several championships, including the 2012 CIKFIA European Karting Championship. In 2014, he transitioned to single-seater racing, competing in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship.
In 2017, Russell won the GP3 Series championship, driving for ART. This achievement earned him a promotion to Formula 2, where he became the champion in 2018. His impressive performance in Formula 2 led to his signing with Williams in 2019, making his Formula One debut at the 2019 Australian Grand Prix.
In 2020, Russell stood in for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix, where he narrowly missed a Grand Prix victory due to strategic errors. In 2022, Russell departed Williams to race for Mercedes, having been a member of the Mercedes Junior Driver Programme since 2017.
Russell achieved his first F1 victory at the 2022 São Paulo Grand Prix and has since accumulated two victories, two pole positions, seven fastest laps, and thirteen podium finishes in his career.
Russell currently resides in Monaco and is a fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, just like his father. Outside of racing, Russell is known to be private about his personal life, but has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including supporting the NSPCC and the Institute of Cancer Research.
As Russell continues to make waves in the world of Formula One, his dedication, talent, and commitment to philanthropy have solidified his position as a rising star in the racing community.
