Born as Gillian Barbara Pyrke on February 20, 1926, in Bromley, Kent, Lynne's talent for dance was evident from a young age. Growing up, she would often dance to blot out the trauma of her mother's violent death in a car crash when Lynne was just 13 years old. Her mother's wise decision to consult a doctor about Lynne's fidgeting and lack of focus in school led to the discovery of her incredible gift. The doctor observed Lynne dancing to the radio and encouraged her mother to enroll her in dance school.
Lynne's dance career took off when she joined Molly Lake's Company, the Ballet Guild, where she was spotted by Ninette de Valois and invited to join Sadler's Wells Ballet during World War II. Her big break came on her 20th birthday, when she received her first major solo in Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House.
In 2014, Lynne was made a DBE for her services to dance and musical theatre. In 2018, the New London Theatre, where the original West End production of Cats first premiered, was renamed the Gillian Lynne Theatre in her honor, making her the first non-royal woman to have a West End theatre named after her.
