A Swedish adventurer who climbed Mount Everest solo and cycled to the summit from Sweden, earning him the nickname "The Crazy Swede".
Gran Kropp, a Swedish adventurer and mountaineer, made history by becoming the first Scandinavian to climb Mount Everest without oxygen in 1996. This daring feat was accomplished during a solo ascent, without the aid of Sherpa support, after traveling to the base of the mountain from Sweden by bicycle and foot.
In 1972, Kropp's father introduced him to the world of mountaineering by taking him to the highest peak in Scandinavia, Galdhopiggen in Norway. This experience sparked a passion in Kropp, which would drive him to pursue a life of adventure and exploration.
After completing school, Kropp served in the Swedish Parachute Rangers, where he underwent rigorous training and met his future climbing partner, Mats Dahlin. This partnership would lead to several notable expeditions and a deep bond between the two men.
In 1988, Kropp traveled to climb Lenin Peak, a 7,134-meter-high mountain located on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. He and his companions accomplished this feat in a record time of 10 days.
In 1989, Kropp had planned to climb Cho Oyu, but a lack of permits led him to explore South America instead. During this journey, he successfully climbed several peaks, including Iliniza Sur, Cotopaxi, Illimani, Huayna Potosi, and Illampu.
In 1990, Kropp participated in a Swedish expedition to climb Muztagh Tower, a 7,273-meter-high mountain in Pakistan. This was the fourth ascent of the mountain, and Kropp's impressive skills were evident in the challenging climb.
In 1992, tragedy struck when Mats Dahlin, Kropp's climbing partner and close friend, was killed by a falling stone while climbing the Aiguille Verte in Chamonix. Despite this devastating loss, Kropp decided to continue their planned expedition to climb Cho Oyu, driven by the knowledge that Dahlin would have wanted him to press on.
On May 23, 1996, Kropp achieved his most remarkable feat by climbing Mount Everest without bottled oxygen or Sherpa support. He reached the summit after a grueling journey from Sweden, which included cycling and walking to the base of the mountain.
Gran Kropp's courageous climb of Mount Everest without oxygen cemented his place in the annals of mountaineering history. His determination, perseverance, and passion for adventure continue to inspire generations of climbers and explorers.
Gran Kropp's remarkable life was marked by extraordinary achievements, personal losses, and an unwavering commitment to his passion for adventure and exploration.
