Rugby Career

Batty's rugby career was marked by his incredible speed and agility, which allowed him to outmaneuver larger opponents despite being one of the smallest players on the field. He played 102 first-class matches and scored an impressive 109 tries. Among his most memorable tries were those against the Barbarians, New South Wales, and the British Lions.

Memorable Tries:

• Second try against the Barbarians at Cardiff on 27 January 1973, where he used a kick to beat J.P.R. Williams to the ball
• Second try against New South Wales on 18 May 1974, where he caught a high kick from teammate Duncan Robertson
• Try against the British Lions at Athletic Park on 18 June 1977, where he intercepted a pass and ran 50 meters to score, despite a crippling knee injury

Later Life and Coaching Career

After retiring from rugby due to a knee injury in 1977, Batty went on to win the New Zealand edition of the televised multisport competition Superstars for three consecutive years from 1977 to 1979. He later moved to Australia, where he coached various teams in Queensland, including a stint as assistant coach for the Queensland Reds. In 2004-2005, he coached the Japanese Top League team Yamaha Jubilo.

Today, Batty lives in a small rural community in Australia, surrounded by his family.
