Johnson's tenure with the Penguins lasted until October 22, 1997, when he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for Tuomas Gronman. He played for the Blackhawks until the 2001-2002 season, after which he joined the Nashville Predators, where he concluded his NHL career.
Throughout his NHL career, Johnson earned 350 points from 134 goals and 216 assists in over 700 games. His most remarkable season was in 1998-1999, where he achieved 16 goals and 34 assists.
