Early Life and Education
Born on June 1, 1966, in Wyckoff, New Jersey, Schiano grew up with a passion for football. He attended Ramapo High School, where he excelled as a 190-pound linebacker. After high school, he went on to attend Bucknell University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and graduated in 1988 with a B.S. in business administration.
Playing Career
Schiano was a three-year letterman at Bucknell, playing as a linebacker. In his junior year, he led the team with 114 tackles and was named to the All-Conference team. In his senior year, he was named team captain and was named to the Sporting News Preseason All-America Team.
Coaching Career
Schiano began his coaching career in 1988 as an assistant coach at Ramapo High School. He then moved on to Rutgers in 1989 as a graduate assistant, followed by a stint at Penn State from 1990 to 1995. In 1996, he joined the Chicago Bears as an assistant coach, where he spent three seasons. From 1999 to 2000, he served as the defensive coordinator for the University of Miami Hurricanes.
Rutgers Years
Schiano's first tenure at Rutgers lasted from 2001 to 2011. During this period, he led the team to six bowl games, including five consecutive appearances from 2005 to 2009. He also guided the Scarlet Knights to a 9-4 record in 2006, the team's first winning season since 1992.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In 2012, Schiano made the jump to the National Football League (NFL), becoming the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although his two-year stint with the Buccaneers was marked by struggles, he did manage to improve the team's defense, which ranked 29th in the league in 2011 to 14th in 2013.
Return to Rutgers
After a seven-year absence, Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020, resuming his role as the head coach. His second stint has seen the Scarlet Knights show significant improvement, with the team winning four of its last five games in the 2020 season.
