Gregory Mertens was a Belgian professional footballer who played as a central defender, known for his promising career cut short by a tragic cardiac arrest during a reserve game in 2015. Mertens began his senior career with Cercle Brugge in the 2010-11 winter transfer window, thanks to the recommendation of manager Bob Peeters, who had previously coached him at K.A.A. Gent reserves. On February 12, 2011, Mertens made his senior debut for Cercle as an 89th-minute substitute against his former team R.S.C. Anderlecht.
Two years later, on May 23, 2013, Mertens scored his first hat-trick against WS Woluwe, showcasing his growing talent on the pitch. His impressive performances earned him a transfer to Lokeren, where he won the Belgian Cup in the 2013-14 season.
On April 27, 2015, Mertens suffered a fatal cardiac arrest during a reserve game against K.R.C. Genk. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was put in an artificially induced coma, but sadly passed away on April 30, 2015.
