The youngest son of King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan, he is a member of the Jordanian royal family and has been involved in various humanitarian and charitable efforts. He has also been an advocate for environmental issues and has worked to promote interfaith dialogue.
Hamzah received his elementary education in Jordan and Amman, and later attended the prestigious Harrow School in England. He then joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, passing out as a commissioned officer in the Jordan Arab Legion in December 1999, with several notable prizes including the Sandhurst Overseas Sword and the HRH Prince Saud Abdullah Prize.
Serving as an officer in the Jordan Arab Army's 40th Armored Brigade, Hamzah attended various military courses and attachments in Jordan, the UK, Poland, Germany, and the US. He currently holds the rank of Brigadier in the Jordan Arab Army and has served with the Jordan-United Arab Emirates force operating in former Yugoslavia under the umbrella of international peacekeepers.
Hamzah was sworn in as Regent on numerous occasions and deputized for King Abdullah II on a number of missions in the Kingdom and abroad. He was named Crown Prince of Jordan on February 7, 1999, a position he held until his older half-brother, King Abdullah II, rescinded it on November 28, 2004.
In 2006, Hamzah graduated from Harvard University. However, in April 2021, he was placed under house arrest after being accused of attempting to destabilize the Kingdom of Jordan and fomenting unrest. Hamzah officially renounced his title as prince in April 2022.
Despite the controversies surrounding his later life, Hamzah bin Hussein's legacy as a member of the Hashemite dynasty and a former Crown Prince of Jordan remains significant. His experiences as a military officer and Regent have provided valuable insights into the country's political and military landscape.
Hamzah's story serves as a reminder of the complexities of royal politics and the delicate balance of power within monarchies. As a direct descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, his legacy is also intertwined with the rich history and cultural heritage of the Hashemite dynasty.
