Budtz was the son of Carl Budtz and Alvida Marie Budtz (née Svendsen). He pursued his passion for acting at the Sorø Academy and later at the Royal Danish Theatre, where he honed his craft under the guidance of Thorkild Roose from 1913 to 1915.
Budtz's professional journey began at the Royal Theatre, where he made his debut on May 15, 1915, as Klint in Christian Hostrup's comedy, Genboerne. He went on to become an actor in residence at the Royal Theatre from 1913 to 1918 and later at the Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen from 1919 to 1927.
During his extensive career, Budtz worked with numerous esteemed theatres, including the Odense Theatre, Folketeatret, Casino Theatre, and National Scala. His remarkable talent and dedication earned him recognition, and he was made a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog for his significant contributions to the arts.

Budtz's final film appearance was in the 1961 Danish television film, dipus, directed by Edvin Tiemroth, marking a fitting conclusion to his remarkable career in film.
Hans Egede Budtz was married three times, first to Maja Emilie Rasmussen in 1913, with whom he had three children: Poul Egede Budtz, Eda Budtz, and Anne Budtz. The couple divorced in 1927, and Budtz married actress Thora Lubich the same year. His second marriage ended in 1935. He married his third wife, actress Alice Schultter, in 1947, and they remained together until his passing on June 29, 1968.
