Hariprasad Chaurasia is an Indian music director and classical flautist, renowned for his mesmerizing performances on the bansuri, a traditional Indian flute, in the Hindustani classical tradition. Born on July 1, 1938, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, Chaurasia grew up in a family that valued wrestling, a tradition he was initially forced to follow. However, his passion for music led him to secretly learn vocal music from his neighbor, Rajaram, at the age of 15.
Chaurasia's life took a dramatic turn when he switched to playing the flute under the tutelage of Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi for eight years. This marked the beginning of his journey as a flautist, and he soon joined All India Radio, Cuttack, Odisha in 1957, where he worked as a composer and performer.
Chaurasia received guidance from the reclusive Annapurna Devi, daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan, who only agreed to teach him if he was willing to unlearn all that he had learned until then. One version of the story also suggests that she only agreed to teach him after he took the decision to switch from right-handed to left-handed playing to show her his commitment. To this day, Chaurasia plays the bansuri with his left hand.
Apart from his classical music prowess, Chaurasia has collaborated with Shivkumar Sharma, forming the group ShivHari, and composed music for several popular movies, including Silsila and Chandni. He has also worked with Bhubaneswar Mishra, forming the pair BhubanHari, and composed music for numerous Odia movies, creating many popular songs.
