Born on November 27, 1907, in Babupatti, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, British India, Harivansh Rai Bachchan belonged to a Hindu Kayastha family. His family name was initially Srivastav, but he later adopted the pen name Bachchan, meaning "child" in Hindi, for his poetry. He pursued his education at the Allahabad University, where he taught in the English Department from 1941 to 1957. Later, he completed his PhD on W.B. Yeats at St Catharines College, Cambridge.
Bachchan married Shyama in 1926, but unfortunately, she passed away in 1936 due to tuberculosis. He then married Teji Suri in 1941, and they had two sons, Amitabh Bachchan and Ajitabh Bachchan. Interestingly, the family surname changed from Shrivastava to Bachchan when Amitabh was admitted to school, as both parents opposed the caste system.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan was a prolific writer, mastering multiple languages, including Hindi, Hindustani, and Awadhi.
