Haenchen's breakthrough came when he revived Johann Adolph Hasse's Requiem at just 17, garnering widespread acclaim. He then pursued higher education in conducting and voice at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber, followed by masterclasses in Berlin, Leningrad, and Austria.
Haenchen's first professional engagement was as director of the Robert-Franz-Singakademie choral society in Halle and conductor of the Halle Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966. In 1971, he won first prize at the Carl Maria von Weber Competition in Dresden, further solidifying his growing reputation.
Between 1972 and 1973, Haenchen served as principal Kapellmeister of the Zwickau Theatre, making his debut at the Berlin State Opera with Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov. During this period, he regularly appeared at the Berlin State Opera and became a frequent guest conductor at the Semperoper in Dresden.
From 1976 to 1979, Haenchen was music director of the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle and Staatstheater in Schwerin. He then became a regular guest conductor at the Komische Oper Berlin. In 1980, he took the reins as artistic director of the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra in Berlin, a position he would hold for an impressive 34 years.
In 1986, Haenchen became music director of the De Nederlandse Opera (DNO) in Amsterdam and chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra (NPO) and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. During his tenure, the DNO earned a reputation for its exceptional ensemble productions and innovative stagings.
