Heather Headley is a Trinidadian-born American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress, best known for her Tony Award-winning performance as the title role in the Broadway musical Aida and her Grammy Award-winning album Audience of One.
Born on October 5, 1974, in Trinidad, Headley was raised in a family that valued faith and music. Her father, Eric Headley, was a pastor, and her mother, Hannah, encouraged her love of singing from a young age. In 1989, the family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Headley attended Northrop High School and developed her skills as a member of the school's show choir, Charisma.
After high school, Headley attended Northwestern University, where she studied musical theatre. However, her college career was cut short when she was cast in the original Toronto production of Ragtime, followed by the role of Nala in the Broadway production of The Lion King. Her breakthrough performance as the title character in Aida earned her the 2000 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Headley's music career took off with the release of her debut album, This Is Who I Am, in 2002. Her follow-up album, In My Mind, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 2010, she won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album for Audience of One.
In addition to her stage and music career, Headley has appeared on television and in film. She had a recurring role as Gwen Garrett on the NBC medical drama Chicago Med and has made guest appearances on shows such as Law & Order: SVU and Dirty Sexy Money.
Headley is married to investment advisor Brian Musso, and the couple has three children together. She is an active member of Harvest Bible Chapel and regularly performs with the church's worship team, Vertical Church Band.
