Born on February 16, 1922, in Calw, Germany, Schnaufer grew up in the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. He developed a passion for flying at a young age, becoming a glider pilot while still in school. In 1939, he joined the Wehrmacht and began his military service in the Luftwaffe.
