While still in college, Helen worked as an extra on popular TV shows like Coronation Street and Cutting It. After a brief stint in public relations, she decided to pursue a career in journalism, working in the newsroom at CFM Radio and Border Television.
In 2005, Helen became one of the youngest breakfast slot presenters on the BBC network when she joined BBC Radio Cumbria. Her charismatic on-air presence soon led to her being appointed as a reporter and occasional presenter on children's news programme Newsround and its weekend sports-based version, Sportsround.
On August 28, 2008, Helen was revealed as a presenter on the iconic BBC children's programme Blue Peter, becoming the 33rd presenter for the show. During her five-year tenure, she took on various challenges, including an uncredited role in the BBC production of Merlin. In August 2013, she announced her departure from Blue Peter, only to be replaced by Radzi Chinyanganya.
