A British photographer and curator recognized for his provocative and humorous works that challenge traditional notions of art and photography, often incorporating found images and everyday objects.
Henry Bond, a British writer, photographer, and visual artist, is renowned for his contributions to theoretical psychoanalysis and forensics, particularly through his groundbreaking work, "Lacan at the Scene" (2009). This innovative book has secured his position as a leading figure in the intersection of art, philosophy, and crime scene investigation.
Born on June 13, 1966, in Forest Gate, East London, Bond's creative potential was nurtured from an early age. He attended Goldsmiths, University of London, graduating in 1988 with a degree in Art, alongside fellow future YBA (Young British Artists) movement icons, such as Angela Bulloch, Ian Davenport, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Hume, and Michael Landy.
In 1990, Bond, along with Sarah Lucas, organized the influential "East Country Yard Show," a pioneering exhibition that played a significant role in shaping the YBA movement. This avant-garde collective, including Damien Hirst, Angela Bulloch, and Liam Gillick, would go on to redefine the British art scene in the 1990s.
Bond's artistic style is characterized by appropriation and pastiche. He has collaborated with fellow YBA artists, such as Sam Taylor-Wood and Liam Gillick, on various projects, including the "Documents Series." His work often explores the boundaries between art and reality, blurring the lines between the two.
In the 1990s, Bond worked as a photojournalist for prominent British fashion, music, and youth culture magazine, The Face. His photographic work has been published in various books, including "The Cult of the Street" (1998), a critically acclaimed photobook capturing the essence of London's street fashion. His subsequent book, "Point and Shoot" (2000), delved into the realms of surveillance, voyeurism, and paparazzi photojournalism.
Bond has pursued advanced studies in psychoanalysis, earning an MA from Middlesex University. He later completed his doctoral research at the University of Gloucestershire in 2007. Currently, he serves as a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Kingston University, fostering the next generation of artists and thinkers.
Henry Bond's diverse oeuvre has left an indelible mark on the art world, influencing contemporary thought and practice. His unique blend of theoretical rigor, artistic innovation, and pedagogical passion continues to inspire and provoke audiences across disciplines.
