Half of the duo Peaches & Herb, known for their sweet harmonies and romantic R&B hits like "Reunited" and "Let's Fall in Love".
Herb Fame, born Herbert Feemster on October 1, 1941, is an American vocalist and songwriter, best known as the constant half of the R&B duo Peaches & Herb, a partnership that has spanned over five decades and seven female counterparts.
Fame grew up in Anacostia, Washington, D.C., where he developed a passion for singing in church and neighborhood groups. After graduating from high school, he worked at a local record store, where he met producer Van McCoy, who introduced him to AR executive Dave Kapralik. This chance encounter led to Fame's signing with Columbia subsidiary Date Records in 1966.
Kapralik suggested that Fame team up with Francine "Peaches" Barker, and the duo's first single, "We're in This Thing Together," was released in December 1966. Although the single initially failed to gain traction, its B-side, a revival of the 1934 hit "Let's Fall in Love," eventually became a hit, propelling the duo to fame.
Over the next year, Peaches & Herb released a string of successful singles and albums, including "Close Your Eyes," "For Your Love," and "Love Is Strange." Despite their success, Barker chose to semi-retire from the duo in 1968, citing the rigors of touring. Fame continued to perform and record with various female partners, including Marlene Mack, Linda Greene Tavani, and others.
In 1978, Peaches & Herb scored their biggest hit with "Shake Your Groove Thing," followed by "Reunited" in 1979, both featuring Linda Greene Tavani on vocals. These hits solidified the duo's status as a beloved R&B institution.
Throughout their career, Peaches & Herb have influenced generations of R&B and soul musicians. Their music has been featured in various films, TV shows, and commercials, ensuring their legacy continues to thrive. Fame's enduring voice and adaptability have made him a staple in the music industry.
Peaches & Herb have been nominated for several awards, including two Grammy nominations for "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Reunited." They were also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.
