Argentinian forward who scored 256 goals in 358 games, holding the record for most goals scored in a calendar year with 56 goals in 1940.
Herminio Masantonio is revered as one of the greatest centre-forwards in Argentine football history, holding the distinction of being Huracán's all-time top scorer and ranking third on the list of Argentine Primera División top scorers with an impressive 253 goals in 358 matches.
Born on August 5, 1910, in Ensenada, Argentina, Masantonio began his football journey with Villa Albino Sportivo, a local club affiliated with the La Plata football league. He made his debut in the fourth division in 1926, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.
Three years later, Masantonio joined Club Platense, where his scoring skills began to gain attention. However, it was Lieutenant Toms Duc, a member of C.A. Huracán, who recognized his potential and convinced him to join Huracán in 1931. This marked the beginning of Masantonio's illustrious career with the club, which would last for many years.
Masantonio's first match with Huracán was a memorable one, as he scored two goals against Quilmes, leading his team to a resounding 5-1 victory. Recalling that match, Masantonio once said, "That evening, I scored the most formidable goal of my life. I took the ball in the center of the field, dribbled the left half, then the center-half, and even the two backs, shooting so strong that not only the goalkeeper couldn't see the trajectory of the ball, but many people only heard a huge strike on one of the goal posts, and nothing else."
In his inaugural season in Primera División, Masantonio scored an impressive 23 goals, cementing his position as a skilled center-forward. While he sometimes tended to abuse dribbling, his talent and dedication earned him a reputation as a formidable opponent on the field.
Herminio Masantonio's remarkable career has left an indelible mark on Argentine football. Despite never winning an official title with Huracán, his impressive goal-scoring record has made him a legend of the club. His contributions to the sport have inspired generations of footballers, and his name remains synonymous with excellence and dedication.
Today, Herminio Masantonio's legacy continues to inspire and influence Argentine football, solidifying his position as one of the greatest goal-scorers in the history of the sport.
