With his unique blend of energy, creativity, and dedication, he has been instrumental in shaping the sound of 2 Tone, a genre that has inspired generations of musicians and fans alike.
Born Stephen Graham Panter on August 30, 1953, in Croydon, Surrey, Horace spent most of his formative years in Kettering, Northamptonshire. He developed a passion for art and music at an early age, which led him to start a one-year art course at Northampton College in 1971. In 1972, he began studying fine art at Coventry's Lanchester Polytechnic, now Coventry University, where he met Jerry Dammers, a fellow student who would become his collaborator in The Specials.
In his second year at Lanchester Polytechnic, Horace and Jerry formed The Specials, a band that would go on to revolutionize the music scene. The band started playing in Coventry bars and clubs before releasing their first single, "Gangsters," on their own record label, 2 Tone. This marked the beginning of a new era in music, characterized by a fusion of ska, punk, and reggae sounds.
In addition to his music career, Horace has made significant contributions to art and education. In the 1990s, he qualified as a teacher and taught art to special needs children at Corley Special School in North Warwickshire from 1998 to 2008. He has written an autobiography, "Ska'd for Life," which offers a glimpse into his experiences with The Specials and the creation of the 2 Tone movement. As an artist, Horace has continued to create and exhibit his work, showcasing his passion for visual expression.
