Born on March 31, 1961, in Queens, New York City, Gordon grew up in a Reform Jewish family and graduated from Roslyn High School. He went on to pursue a degree in creative writing from Princeton University, graduating in 1984. After completing his education, Gordon moved to Los Angeles with his fellow filmmaker Alex Gansa to pursue a career in writing for television.
Gordon's big break came when he and Gansa wrote an episode for the ABC series Spenser For Hire. Their work on the show caught the attention of industry professionals, leading to them being hired as staff writers on the series Beauty and the Beast. The duo's success continued to grow, and they soon signed a two-year deal with WittThomas Productions, producing several pilots and working on various projects.
In 1990, Gordon and Gansa joined the team of The X-Files as supervising producers, where Gordon wrote or co-wrote several scripts each season. After departing from the series in 1997, Gordon went on to create his own show, Strange World, which, although short-lived, showcased his unique storytelling style. He then joined the team of Angel, working alongside Joss Whedon, before moving on to FOX's 24, where he would write several episodes and craft the entire story arcs for Seasons 3 and 4.
In 2011, Gordon co-created the hit series Homeland alongside Alex Gansa and Gideon Raff, which went on to win numerous awards, including several Emmys. He also co-created the FX political drama Tyrant with Craig Wright, which premiered in 2014.
