Under the management of Bobby Ancell, St John was part of a talented group of young players at Motherwell, nicknamed the "Ancell Babes." He made his debut against Queen of the South in 1957 and went on to score a remarkable hat-trick in just two minutes and 30 seconds against Hibernian in 1959, one of the fastest recorded in Scottish football history.

The Liverpool Years

In 1961, Bill Shankly signed St John for Liverpool, where he became an integral part of the team that dominated English football in the 1960s.
