Born on July 23, 1950, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Thomas grew up in a family of artists. His mother, Moreen Duff Muir, was a church organist and composer of church music, while his father, John E. Thomas, was a medical ethicist and author. The family moved temporarily to Durham, North Carolina, where Thomas' father earned a PhD in philosophy from Duke University. They later returned to Dundas, Ontario, in 1961.
Thomas' music career began in the 1960s as part of the folk music group Tranquility Base. He later became a producer at the CBC before breaking into the music scene as a solo artist.
In 1973, Thomas released "Painted Ladies," which became a massive hit in Canada and peaked at number 34 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song remains one of his most memorable hits and a classic of Canadian rock music.
