Ilija Arai, born on November 15, 1970, is a Croatian football coach and former player who made a name for himself as a skilled striker. With a career spanning over two decades, Arai has left an indelible mark on the football world, both as a player and a coach.
Arai was born in Slavonski Brod, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia, into a sporting family. He began his footballing career at the tender age of 9 at NK Ukrina Novo Selo, before moving to NK Polet Bosanski Brod at 14, where his father Anto played professionally.
His talent was soon recognized, and he was spotted by scouts of Prva HNL side NK Rijeka, where he played for his local team. However, the War of Independence forced Arai to leave Croatia, and he signed for Chemnitzer FC in Germany. He later transferred to Tennis Borussia Berlin in 1997, where his two goals against Hertha BSC in the DFB-Pokal earned him a move to the fellow West Berlin rivals.
After hanging up his boots, Arai transitioned into coaching, taking over as coach of FC Augsburg's youth team in 2004. His success in the youth ranks earned him a promotion to head coach of the under-19 team of VfB Stuttgart in 2012.
In 2016, Arai moved to FV Illertissen, before returning to VfB Stuttgart in 2018 as assistant coach of Tayfun Korkut. Throughout his coaching career, Arai has demonstrated his ability to develop young talent and improve team performance.
