Kalni's musical journey began in the 1960s when he led the Liepja rock band 2xBBM, known for its heartfelt songs and hippie-like lifestyle. This era cemented his status as a symbol of spirituality, rebellion, and worldview for his generation. Despite the band's forced hiatus due to official pressure, Kalni's music continued to thrive through the popular band Menuets, which almost exclusively played his songs.
In the 1970s, Kalni returned to symphonic music, composing seven symphonies that showcased his mastery of classical music. One of his most notable works is the rock oratorio "K jra, k zeme, k debess" (Like the sea, like the earth, like the sky), written in collaboration with Juris Kulakovs and Juris Sjns in 1984. This oratorio marked his return to rock music and led to the creation of the band Prkons, for which he wrote many new songs.
