Lewis continued to serve as an independent MP until the 2019 General Election, when he stood as an independent candidate in Bury South.
During the 2019 General Election campaign, Lewis made headlines when he urged voters to support the Conservatives rather than himself, fearing that his candidature could inadvertently boost Corbyn's chances of becoming Prime Minister.
Lewis' political career was not without controversy. The sexual misconduct allegations in 2017 led to his suspension from the Labour Party, and his eventual resignation from the party due to concerns about antisemitism.
Lewis served as a Councillor on Bury Metropolitan Borough Council for the Sedgley ward before his election as MP in 1997. He has been married to his wife, Helen, since 1994, and they have two children together.
