After running away from home at 15, Clement joined the United States Marine Corps in 1948, where he formed the Tennessee Troupers, a bluegrass band, with fiddler Scotty Stoneman and mandolinist Buzz Busby.
In 1956, Clement was hired by Sam Phillips as a producer and engineer at Sun Records, where he worked with the likes of Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. It was during this time that Clement discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, capturing the iconic "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" session, which would later be selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress.
Clement was also the recording engineer present for the impromptu December 4, 1956, Million Dollar Quartet session, featuring Cash, Lewis, Perkins, and Elvis Presley. His decision to record the session would go on to become one of the most significant moments in music history.
Clement's songwriting credits include hits like "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," which became a crossover hit for Johnny Cash, as well as "Guess Things Happen That Way" and "The One on the Right Is on the Left."
