Before becoming a writer, Prelutsky worked an array of odd jobs, including driving a cab, moving furniture, working as a busboy, potter, woodworker, and door-to-door salesman. It was during this time that he began singing in coffeehouses under the pseudonym Jack Ballard, where he met Bob Dylan and honed his musical skills.
