Born John Warden Lebzelter Jr. on September 18, 1920, in Newark, New Jersey, Warden's early life was marked by a series of unconventional careers. He was expelled from high school for fighting, went on to become a professional boxer under the name Johnny Costello, and later worked as a nightclub bouncer, tugboat deckhand, and lifeguard.
In 1938, Warden joined the United States Navy, where he was stationed in China with the Yangtze Patrol. During World War II, he served as a paratrooper in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, with the 101st Airborne Division. A near-fatal accident in 1944, which shattered his leg during a practice jump, led him to reconsider his life's path. While recuperating in the hospital, Warden discovered his passion for acting, thanks to a Clifford Odets play.
After leaving the army, Warden moved to New York City and studied acting on the G.I. Bill. He joined the Theatre 47 company in Dallas, where he spent five years honing his craft on stage. Warden's breakthrough came in 1948, when he began his television career, landing roles in various shows and films. His portrayal of a paratrooper in That Kind of Woman (1959) showcased his ability to bring depth to supporting characters.
