Lead vocalist and guitarist of the Scottish indie rock band 1990s, known for catchy hooks and witty lyrics. Their music often explores themes of relationships and British culture.
Jackie McKeown, born John McKeown, is a Scottish musician known for his energetic performances and eclectic style as the lead singer and guitarist of the Glasgow indie rock band The Yummy Fur in the 1990s. With his unique voice and songwriting skills, McKeown has been a prominent figure in the indie rock scene, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
McKeown was born on February 17, 1971, in Bellshill, Scotland, and grew up in Blantyre near Glasgow. His teenage years were heavily influenced by David Bowie and European art cinema, which would later shape his artistic vision. At 16, he began playing guitar and writing songs, forming his first bands, Glass Candle and Subliminal Girls, after leaving school in 1988.
In 1992, McKeown formed The Yummy Fur with Jamie McMorrow, which became a staple of the Glasgow indie rock scene. During this period, he also performed in Cotton Gum and played guitar in LungLeg, his sister Jane's band, for a UK tour. In the late 1990s, he often played lead guitar for Comet Gain and featured on their album Tigertown Pictures (1999).
After The Yummy Fur disbanded in December 1999, McKeown pursued new musical endeavors. He formed a short-lived electronic pop band called The Girls with former Yummy Fur member Alex Kapranos, which performed live only once in Glasgow. He then collaborated with Paul Thomson, creating absurdist electronic pop under the name 10,000 Volt Ghost, which evolved into The Mars Hotel with the addition of Jenni McKenzie.
In 2001, McKeown began writing and recording songs with Michael McGaughrin, which eventually became 1990s with the addition of former Yummy Fur bassist Jamie McMorrow. This marked the beginning of his new musical chapter, with the band releasing two critically acclaimed albums, Cookies (2007) and Kicks, on Rough Trade Records.
Jackie McKeown's contributions to the indie rock scene have been immense, with his unique sound and style influencing a generation of musicians. His work with The Yummy Fur and 1990s has left an indelible mark on the music industry, with his music continuing to inspire and influence new artists.
McKeown got married and attended university for the first time, studying film theory, after The Yummy Fur disbanded. He has kept a relatively low profile in recent years, but his legacy as a pioneering figure in indie rock continues to be celebrated by fans and fellow musicians alike.
