Born on January 30, 1989, in Richmond, California, Best attended Salesian High School, where he showcased his athletic prowess. As a junior, he ran for 1,495 yards on 138 attempts with 20 touchdowns, leading his team to the North Coast Section championship. In his senior year, he set Bay Area single-season records with 3,325 yards and 48 touchdowns.
Best's impressive high school performance earned him a spot at the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college football for the California Golden Bears. He set several school records, including most all-purpose yards in a single season and most rushing yards in a single game. He also led the Pac-10 in total rushing yards in 2008.
In addition to his football exploits, Best was an accomplished track athlete. He won the 100 meter dash at the Arcadia Invitational in his junior year, and the 200 meter dash in his senior year. At the 2006 CIF California State Meet, he finished third in the 200 meters behind Bryshon Nellum and Devin Mays.
The Detroit Lions selected Best in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. He played for the Lions from 2010 to 2012, before transitioning to track and field. He represented Saint Lucia in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where he participated in the 100 meters and 4x100 meters relay events.
After retiring from professional sports, Best turned to coaching. He became the head football coach of the Saint Mary's College High School Panthers in Berkeley, California, for one season.
