He played seven years in the Vienna DC Timberwolves youth program and later joined the Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions of the Austrian Bundesliga for a year.
Pltl's talent was discovered during the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, where he impressed University of Utah assistant coach Andy Hill with his 15-rebound performance. Hill recruited Pltl to play college basketball in the United States, and he went on to average a double-double in points and rebounds during the tournament, earning a spot on the second all-tournament team.
