Her maternal ancestry is Irish, while her paternal ancestry, Curtin, is also Irish, originating from Newmarket-on-Fergus, County Clare.
Curtin was raised Roman Catholic and grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She graduated from Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in Newton in 1965. She then earned an associate degree from Elizabeth Seton Junior College in New York City in 1967, before attending Northeastern University from 1967 to 1968.
In 1968, Curtin decided to pursue comedy as a career, dropping out of college to hone her craft. Her big break came in 1975 when she joined the original cast of Saturday Night Live, where she became known for her unique blend of wit, satire, and physical comedy.
